If there is anything this pandemic taught us, it must be the that nature is more important than ever. One of the reason I started Camp Goat, to show people how nourishing the outdoors can be. What the pandemic also brought us were: Hobbies! Lot's of hobbies. People went roller-skating, puzzles and board games were sold out everywhere and of course people started baking bread. More specifically sourdough bread. - The Volkskrant even did a special piece on the names people gave to their sourdough starters. This last trend didn't skip me either. My mom started baking the most beautiful creations, you can spot them on her highlights on instagram. Of course I couldn't stay behind.
What you need for a proper sourdough bread is of course a good and alive sourdough starter. This is what creates the unique and different taste compared to a dry yeast bread. My mom and I both are big fans of Zuurbrood. The have great recipes, inspiration and tools. We both use the all-in-one sourdough pack. Great recommendation if you want to start baking. But what is very important and what you shouldn't forget is a proper cast iron pan. The pan creates a sort of extra oven and keep the heat inside, making sure you bread rises properly. One of my plans for the new year is to bake a bread on outdoor fire. Cause nothing is as good as a warm slice of bread especially after a long hike. Besides having the ability to get really hot, did you know a cast iron pan also stay cold for a long time? Perfect for summer bbq's. In the store you can find the Valhal Dutch outdoor oven, made by a Dutch company that want to make sure you have products that can last a life time. Ready?? Start baking!
